Mini, Traditional or Circumferential? A Guide to Abdominoplasty Types

One of the most common questions in the clinic is, “Which type of abdominoplasty do I need?” There is no single operation that suits everyone. Several options are available, and the choice is personalized based on the amount of excess skin, physical condition and individual goals.

Is there more than one type of abdominoplasty? Yes.

Mini Abdominoplasty

A focused operation that removes a relatively small amount of excess skin from the lower abdomen. It may suit someone whose concern is concentrated below the navel, for example after one pregnancy or moderate weight loss.

Traditional (Full) Abdominoplasty

The most common form treats both the upper and lower abdomen. It usually includes repair of separated abdominal muscles (diastasis) and adjunctive liposuction and is appropriate for many post-pregnancy cases.

Circumferential Abdominoplasty

The most comprehensive version is designed primarily for people who have lost substantial weight, for example after bariatric surgery, and have excess skin not only on the abdomen but also around the waist, lower back, buttocks and thighs. The operation extends around the body to treat these areas as a whole.

How Do You Know Which Is Right for You?

Every patient has different anatomy, so the decision is made only after an examination and personal consultation, during which a surgical plan is tailored to the individual.

As with every operation, results vary from patient to patient. Recovery and risks are also discussed during the consultation.
